5 styling tips for your next brand photoshoot: By Hannah Walker
Deciding what to wear on your branding photo shoot can be a little overwhelming – it’s not only a question of what you feel great in, but also what message you want to put across and how well your outfits complement your brand colour palette.
So what should you wear to a branding shoot that reflects the real you? And how can you use your personal style to convey the right message for your business? Here are my quick tips for dressing for your next photo shoot:
1. Wear what makes you feel like YOU
It’s easy to get caught up thinking about what we should look like, rather than what feels authentic in photos. Remember that the clothes you wear should help you feel your very best self everyday and it’s no different for a photo shoot. If you’re feeling really good (and comfortable!) in your outfit – that confidence is going to shine through in your photos. Whether it be the structure, colour or texture of the item, wear what makes you feel authentic to yourself and your brand.
2. Necklines are the window to your style
Nothing speaks more powerfully than what we wear near our face. That includes the type of neckline shape that we wear (round, high, v neck), whether it’s open or closed, and the colours that you choose. For example if you’re looking at a headshot of someone in a suit, you’re going to get a different sense of the person if they’re wearing black vs. blue! If you’re not sure what colour you should wear for your shoot, test a few neutral colours by holding them under your chin and look for the ones that softens your skin tone and increases the depth of your eye colour.
3. Shop your wardrobe first
After you’ve considered your colours, have a look at shortlisting some outfit ideas from your own wardrobe. Start with pulling out a few basic pieces, and these might look like your favourite jeans and tee combo or a versatile dress that makes you feel really good. Then see how you can elevate it from there with a statement piece. Statement pieces don’t have to be bold in style, but are different to your basic pieces and this can be anything from a patterned blazer or your favourite pair of boots. Try on the shortlisted outfits and take some photos of yourself in them to get an idea of how the clothes look photographed.
4. Try on any new items in advance
If you feel like you do need to grab a few new pieces for your photos, allow a few weeks between a shopping trip and your shoot day. Try on your new clothes a couple of times to make sure you’re happy with how they look on. Sometimes a top we love on the hanger turns out to be a little too see-through than we’d like. Or maybe your high-waisted trousers don’t sit quite right with the blouse you planned to pair them with. Always check these things in advance so that you can find alternatives in good time and avoid turning up to your shoot feeling flustered.
5. Consider hiring a stylist
When organising your shoot, your outfit is just as important at the photographer, location, hair or makeup. Clothes are powerful so I can work with you to ensure you’re communicating what you and your business are about through your personal style. Ensuring your clothes are on brand is something I love to coordinate, and I’ll be there with your photographer to make sure you have the best experience possible!
